Rain Didn’t Dampen Spirits at Christmas in Cooroy

3 After the Great Santa Race with WinnersThe heavens opened up last weekend but thousands of people still turned out to celebrate the 10th annual Christmas in Cooroy.

Friday night kicked off with the opening of the Cooroy Central Guardian Pharmacy “Remember When…” photo exhibition in the Butter Factory Arts Centre with Jacob Baeklund and Stuart Chapman taking out 1st and 2nd in the junior category and Andrea Ames and Leo Wiles taking out the senior category prizes.  The exhibition continues on until 24 January 2015.

At the turning on of the beautiful Ri-con Christmas tree everyone had an absolute ball and were witness to a Christmas miracle as snow fell on Maple Street at the foot of the Sunshine Coast’s most spectacular tree!

The Noosa to Hinterland Plumbing Group Great Santa Race raised $1,000 for the Leukaemia Foundation with siblings Sam Blake and Alexandra Blake taking out first male and first female and Andrew Cowan and Jay Clark receiving 2nd and 3rd prizes.

4 Tadpoles Float The street was lined with people and umbrellas to see the ever popular Bendigo Bank street parade and the floats were of a spectacular standard this year.  Over 40 businesses and community groups participated and the Wild West theme was a big hit.  Tadpoles Early Learning Centre snatched the title of Best Float this year but it was a tough competition with Cooroora Woodworkers, Cooroy Uniting Church, Lakeridge Health and Beauty and the Christmas Crackers all close on their tails in the scoring stakes according to judges Cr Frank Wilkie and Cr Sandy Bolton.

The East Side Traders were ecstatic to retain their title in the East versus West Tug of War for the third year running.  The free activities had cues of people all evening with the free Cooroy Rag rides, the Cooroy Family Practice sponsored face painting and the Bucking Bull sponsored by Gelignite Jacks and Cooroy Poolwerx all enormous hits with the crowds.

“There is a long list of people to thank for this event including over 50 sponsors, the thousands of people that come to the event despite the rain, the volunteers, the Christmas in Cooroy committee, Rotary Club of Cooroy, Noosa SES, Cooroy Chamber of Commerce, Cooroy Police and our MCs who all gave up copious amounts of time.  It’s the fantastic community spirit that Cooroy has that makes this event so special,” said Cooroy Chamber of Commerce president, Danielle Taylor.
