  • Thanks goes to Firefly Solutions for organising such a great event for Cooroy Chamber.
  • Coffee shops and retail happy with the weekend. Visitors to ABAF seemed to visit festival then leave and visit Cooroy business precinct then return to festival.

Cheque acc. $161,022.48   Term Deposit $26,182.06

Danielle raised that the next month or so will be difficult for cash flow as we have the payments for CCTV, Body Art and Kurui all as outgoings that will just about wipe out the cheque account.  But we do have another $15,000 from CCTV grant in May and a lot of memberships to come in April.  Will be tight though but can pull money out of the term deposit if needed.

  1. Other Business:
  • Australian Body Art Update. Record number of artists booked in.  Lots of inkind sponsors and some donations and a few small cash sponsors.  Still waiting to hear about gambling benefit fund grant.  Wattle Media from Brisbane have come on board as inkind sponsors.  Event is in a profit situation although it is a false profit due to amount of inkind (so we’ll need more cash sponsors for 2018 but that should be achievable once we demonstrate this year’s success).  At least this year it will be in a position that Chamber doesn’t make a loss and will be able to pay Firefly Solutions for some of the inkind work they’ve done.
  • Kurui update, Kurui is at QMP getting design changes, hopefully done this month.
  • CCTV update Presentation on 14th March at 5.30pm Cooroy Hotel – over 70 booked to attend
  • Xmas in Cooroy Update Tree Decorations have been collected from Ricon and stored at David Campbells shed. Need to get Barry (Studio Steel) and Trevor Luff and an electrician together to plan how they’ll put it up.
  • Firefly Solutions is changing to a Company as of 1 April and from then on any work will be by the company – new agreements will be signed under Firefly Solutions Pty Ltd.
  • Next Chamber Networking Night – A free night on Tuesday May 2nd 5.30pm for a 6pm start at Cooroy Hotel invite Clubs. Food will be Pizza. Lynda to book with Cooroy Hotel.  Andy to promote to members.  Tania/Elona to do a ring around on 24
  • RV vouchers have run out – Andy will ask again in an email but if no response we won’t do it anymore and will just use Kurui (which we currently use also).

    1. Mail

Mail In:     Mike Price – Traffic Issues

    Mail Out:   Nil

    1. Other Business:

    • Ray Kelly – requested Letter of Support from Cooroy Chamber that we support the re-opening of the Cooroy Hall – all agreed – Danielle to write and send.
    • Mike Price – Traffic Issues – Mike has produced another lot of correspondence and has been to several meetings.  He also rang Danielle and said that the he was told the reason we hadn’t had a solution was that Cooroy had dropped the ball and were not lobbying hard enough.  Danielle explained she found that hard to believe as we’d been told it was not a high risk area (no deaths) so was lower on the list because of that.   She further explained that Chamber has been doing it for more than 10 years and it isn’t the only project we have to work on and it also wasn’t the sole responsibility of Chamber to make it happen.  He suggested we write a letter every 2 months and suggested we get a person on our committee to do that.  I said we are all volunteers and nobody has time to do that.  He said CARA are going to have a meeting about it.  All discussed and agreed that it was best left to CARA as a resident’s association.  We aren’t going to write 2 monthly letters as we’ll just become a nuisance.  We’ll put input in as needed.
    • Sponsorship Request – Cooroy Originals (currently give $100/event plus marquees plus electricity usage) – request for the same – 4 events / year (4th Sunday in Feb, May, August and November.  Decision:  We are not lending out our pop up marquees anymore to anyone.  They can use our electricity ($120 hire value) and our Hoeker marquee ($400 hire value) but will have to advise us immediately of any damage and pay for it to be fixed.  We will promote the event on all our channels (priceless value).  We would like our logo on the posters, etc.
    • Sponsorship Request – Cooroy Fusion – discussed and agreed we will sponsor again particularly as Cooroy Future Group / Butter Factory are inkind sponsors of the Body Art Festival.  Decision:  Agreed to pay Gold $550 level again plus provide inkind promotion through website, Facebook and Kurui full page ad ($720 value) and special section on the Cooroy App as per previous years ($440 value) which is one of their sponsor benefits.  Ask if we can be recognised as Platinum Sponsor given the cash and in-kind actually exceeds that level of sponsorship.
    • Kurui Update – Andy will do final ring around of last year’s advertisers and we’ll send it to print (advertising numbers have reduced but we should still make a break even/small profit).  With current advertisers we are at break even so we’ll just get it moving and may pick up an extra advertiser or two.
    • CCTV Update – all installed apart from a few upgrades still to be done.  About $7,700 plus GST still to spend.  Will be holding a launch night on 14 March at 5.30pm at Cooroy Hotel.  Invitation only – Chamber members and other invited guests.  Andy/Danielle will send email and start RSVP list.  Tania & Elona will do a ring around.
    • Australian Body Art Festival Update – have had a lot of support, still coming in.  Budget situation is that we are at about $1,000 loss now.  So we will get it into a situation where the event will achieve a breakeven / start making a profit.  We will then pay Firefly Solutions for some of their services (they’ve currently invested over $4K in wages to get the event up to this stage and there will be more in coming months).  Firefly Solutions happy to donate some time but we will mitigate as much of their costs as possible through using any profit we make for the event.  Will also try to keep a small amount aside to go towards seed funding for next year.
    • Tania and Elona asked if we could change executive meetings to Monday as Tania gets every 2nd Monday off and would be able to attend.  All present agreed that would be okay.  So next meeting we’ll move to Monday 13 March and do them every four weeks from then.

A really good event.  There were about 60 to 70 attendees and nearly every State, National and local government representative for Sunshine Coast and Noosa were in the room.

Very interesting speakers on Integrated Transport Strategy; Next Generation Planning; Revitalising the Coastline; Health & Education – Key to a Smart Region?; and the Value of Measuring Regional Sustainability

Things I learned:

  • Integrated Transport Strategy – “walkable” cities (were you can walk anywhere in 30 mins) were what cities were originally founded on, then they moved to Integrated cities where you could get 20km in 30 minutes (tram/train) and then with the increased use of cars you could get much further in 30 minutes and this changed the culture of our communities. Due to our car dependence this is now causing issues (congestion etc) – the people in 177 cars can be fit into 3 buses or 1 tram.   There is a move away from car use.  Top 6 walkable cities in USA have 38% higher GDP.  Cooroy is walkable!
  • Next Gen Planning – we have a lot of Australia’s top sustainable architects in Noosa / Sunshine Coast
  • Revitalising the Coastline – 75% of your property value is directly related to the distance to the beach. The Beach is a marine ecosystem – we don’t treat any other marine ecosystem with the same disrespect.  We did our coastal development wrong – strip development, built close to the sand (the beach moves), used as roads, allowed dogs on them – all big no nos!  85% of Noosa/SC beaches (344km) has been treated this way.  Only 20km of conservation land on beaches and of this only 8km where dogs are not allowed!  We use the beach as a drawcard for tourism and as locals love it also.  But we are loving it to death – need to change and compromise to ensure the future.
  • Health & Education : Intergenerational Care (co-located aged and child care) is a developing area.

Beneficial for us – we got a new member – Tulip Design

Should we join Sunshine Coast Business Council?  Seems more organised than the Combined Chambers.  CCIQ Noosa are members.  It would be $750+GST per year.  Refer attached for more info (ignore number of employees info).

Tourism Noosa Members Forum Noosa Sustainable Destination Action Plan 2022

Setting the plan for Tourism Noosa for 2017 to 2022 period.  “Riding the Next Wave of Tourism”

Quite an interesting session and good to see so much hinterland representation including Cooroy, Pomona and Kin Kin representatives.

Some things I learned:

  • Tourism Noosa has 603 members
  • It is anticipated that there will be 1 billion extra trips taken by 2035. Therefore, responsible tourism is increasingly important
  • Top 5 international markets visiting Noosa are China, UK, US, Japan and New Zealand
  • April, July and September are the low peak tourism periods now
  • 75% of visitors to Noosa drive here
